The story centers around a man named Jean Valjean, who was imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread for a hungry child of his sister. After being released inspired by a merciful act of a bishop, he decided to start a new and upright life. But, he is continuously followed by a police inspector named Javert, who is blinded to the honorable nature of Valjean.
Along with some of the other characters including Cosette, Valjean’s adopted daughter and a student Marius, who Cosette eventually marries, Valjean faces the turmoil upheaved by the French Revolution. The story witnesses a lot of death along the way but restoration also takes place.

Many critics lashed at it with disapproving comments, calling it a downright boring story.
